Rev. Lawrence was senior minister of Fall River’s First Congregational Church since 1985. He’s began the Pastoral Care Dept. at Charlton Memorial Hospital, served as chaplain aboard the QE2ocean liner and chaplain at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Rev. Lawrence is a trustee on three charitable foundations and on the board if 18 community organizations. Recently, he agreed to Chair the reconstituted Board of the struggling Marine Museum and helped turn around this important Fall River institution.

In 2014, UMass Dartmouth announced a $1.14 million anonymous gift to honor Rev. Lawrence by supporting the Robert & Jeanne Leduc Center for Civic Engagement that opened on campus in 2008 to better integrate the talents of students and faculty with the needs of the community.

In the past year, UMass Dartmouth students dedicated 195,063 hours of community service at a value of $5.3 million. Washington Monthly ranked UMass Dartmouth #25 on its list of best master's institutions focusing on the impacts a university has on communities.

UMass Dartmouth also dedicated a room as the Rev. Dr. Robert P. Lawrence Community Service Room, a gathering place for students and faculty to reflect upon their community service and engagement.

Rev. Lawrence is a founding member of the Fall River Alumni Network.
